Eslava Galán comienza su historia de «La Conquista de América contada para escépticos» con la recreación de un encuentro entre dos comerciantes de especias, un veneciano y un flamenco. Tiene lugar en Venecia en 1462, y en él ambos se lamentan por la escasez y notable subida de precios de las mismas. La ruta a las Indias y al mercado de Constantinopla se han cerrado a Occidente al haber caído en manos del imperio otomano.
El veneciano sabe que la tierra es redonda y que existen rutas alternativas a las indias, atravesando el océano o rodeando África, pero considera que ambas son imposibles, una por su extensión y otra por el calentamiento extremo de las aguas en el ecuador, teoría esta última que había defendido en su día Aristóteles.
Las tan necesarias especias
En aquel entonces, la única especia que se producía en Europa era el azafrán. Todas las demás se importaban de la India y eran un producto fundamental para los más pudientes, que las usaban para dar sabor a una alimentación basada exclusivamente en carnes. También tenían usos medicinales.
