La gran pregunta del libro es: ¿Qué es la belleza? Pregunta que no podemos contestar de forma exhaustiva ni taxativa, pero si aproximarnos a entender la belleza a través de la reflexión filosófica sobre conceptos afines: arte, amor, valores éticos y religión. Belleza, aunque escurridiza e indefinida, tiene, según Scruton, el poder de conectarnos con algo trascendental, supremo e indescriptible y de allí los símiles con el enamoramiento, atracción física, experiencia religiosa, sentimiento moral. La belleza, dice Scruton al final de su libro, nace del sacrificio y puede redimir el sufrimiento. Podemos aproximarnos al concepto de la belleza también a través de su negación: el kitsch, el desprecio por la estética y el instrumentalismo. Kitsch- el mundo de producciones intercambiables, empalagosas y almibaradas rinde un gran homenaje a la superficialidad. El desprecio por la estética que prioriza la utilidad Scruton ejemplifica con la arquitectura moderna de grandes barrios dormitorios desalmados, donde nadie quiere vivir y que solo generaron la degradación social. Finalmente, el enfoque instrumentalista es lo que distingue el arte erótico, por ejemplo, de la pornografía. En el primer caso admiramos la belleza de una persona, o su representación, de forma desinteresada, en el segundo solo queremos satisfacer el deseo usando la persona como mero objeto para nuestro fin. Scruton en su ensayo atenta contra el arte no-clásico, no-figurativo, contra la vanguardia y la provocación. Según el autor este tipo de manifestaciones artísticas están exentas de belleza, su contemplación no nos aporta nada sublime, no nos embelesa, no nos enamora. ¿Dónde reside la belleza, será solo en el arte clásico como parece insinuar Scruton? ¿Por qué la belleza no nos deja indiferentes? ¿Cuál es el papel de la belleza en nuestras vidas?
