Un aspecto muy interesante en la vida de Camus, fue el papel del fútbol, que como buen niño pobre practicó desde pequeño, jugando luego en el Racing Universitario de Argel entre 1928 y 1940. Al principio era delantero, hasta que cayó enfermo de tuberculosis, una enfermedad de la pobreza. Logró sobrevivir a la enfermedad, pero dadas las secuelas en su capacidad aeróbica, volvió a jugar pero como portero, y lo hizo muy bien, siendo muy recordado por sus buenas actuaciones. Cuando se fue a París, se convirtió en seguidor del Racing de París, equipo con los mismos colores que el de Argel (y los mismos también que los del Racing de Avellaneda, en Argentina, el equipo del que yo era seguidor en mi infancia y juventud!!!) El punto futbolero de Camus se lee en su novela, y siempre hace referencia a él en sus dichos, refiriéndose al fútbol como fuente de sabiduría moral y encuentro cultural, postura que el defendía frente a los extremismos nacionalistas, tanto francés como argelino, y que le costaba duras críticas desde ambos lados.
